Last night we pulled into Amarillo TX at 1am after deciding to leave Denton TX with a break in the weather. Entering Amarillo all the rest stops and truck stops where full so we ended up camping in the Walmart parking lot. We were in good company with another 10 or so RVers. We had made 325 miles on state highway 287 in just under 5 hours. The kids had long since fallen asleep in the truck and were transferred easily to bed in the trailer. I was happily surprised we slept well. Jeff got up at six something and then I awoke to a big crashing and wrenching of metal… a car crash in the parking lot just meters from us. Time to get up and down the road!
We decided to take more state highways on our quest to reach Colorado today. The kids got a quick snack type breakfast and we made a quick 80 miles to stop for brunch at a local diner in Dalhart TX. We kept following 87 through the corner of New Mexico and then headed north on I-25 into Colorado. L had slept almost 3 hours since brunch so we got all the way to Trinidad CO before we stopped for a break.
The North Pueblo KOA was a nice surprise. I had tried to get a place in Colorado Springs but they were all full. Probably should have planned ahead for a Saturday night. Oh well, this place fits what we need. Q loved the bounce pillow and rental bikes. L had a blast in the pool, on the swings and during our nature walk. The camp store made us pizza and wings for dinner. All told we made 656 miles in the last 24 hours. And that’s a wrap for today.
